Chapter 18
“Well, that was interesting,” I said, as Kate and I walked down the steps of Miss Evangeline’s townhouse.
“You can say that again.” Kate clutched the railing, teetering down the steps in her heels which were not made for uneven Georgetown streets. Not that that had ever stopped her before.
We both waved at the bay window and saw the older lady and Fern waving back from where he stood behind her. After watching him comb her hair for a solid fifteen minutes, I suspected his weekly visits were more about conversation than actual hair styling.
“Are you thinking the blonde she saw was Ava?” Kate asked once she’d reached the sidewalk.
“Who else could it be?”
Kate brushed her hands together and small flakes of rust from the railing sifted to the ground. “There are other women with bouncy blond hair in Washington.”
“How many of them would be out that early and sneaking up the side of Amanda’s house?” I rubbed my arms and noticed that the temperature had dropped a few degrees since we’d been inside and a breeze had picked up, blowing some leaves past us down the brick sidewalk.
Kate frowned. “Miss Evangeline did say sneaking, didn’t she?”
“What I don’t know is why Amanda’s sister would have any reason to be sneaking around the back of the house. I mean, it’s her sister and they’re close. She would just knock on the front door.”
“Or walk in,” Kate said. “I’ll bet she has a key.”
I snapped my fingers. “Excellent point. She probably has a key, so why would she need to sneak in the back? There’s nothing back there but a sad excuse for a back yard and a parking space.”
“I guess we could always ask Amanda.” She nudged me and pointed across the street to where our former bride was getting out of a parked car in front of her house. The brunette had her hair pulled half up and wore a black skirt topped with a black-and-white striped T-shirt. She looked better than she had the last time we’d seen her, but considerably more causal than I was used to the former beauty queen looking.
“Why not?” I said under my breath, hurrying across the street and pulling Kate along behind me as she muttered something about not being serious.
Amanda glanced up when we reached her, her eyes widening for a moment before she smiled at us. “Annabelle! Kate! I didn’t expect to see you here.”
I jerked a thumb behind me. “We happened to be meeting with a new client when we saw you.”
She nodded at my explanation. “I guess weddings never stop, do they?”
I didn’t answer her question with more than a vague nod. “How are you doing, Amanda?” Although she wasn’t wearing as much makeup as she usually did, she was still more made up than I got when I went out to a nightclub, which wasn’t often.
She drew in a shaky breath. “Not great. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Brock has been declared missing and the police think—” She slapped a hand across her mouth as her eyes filled with tears.
